Iraq's Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Sadaawi, has directed contractors to accelerate work on Nasiriyah International Airport as the project enters its final stages.

During a meeting at the General Company for Air Navigation Services, attended by representatives of China's CSCEC (China State Construction Engineering Corporation), the implementing contractor, and senior Iraqi aviation officials, the minister stressed the need to complete all technical and administrative requirements on schedule and in line with international airport standards.

Al-Sadaawi emphasised speeding up work on air navigation systems and operational infrastructure, with close monitoring to ensure compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards. He described the airport as a strategic project for Dhi Qar province, providing its first and only air gateway and supporting economic activity, investment and sustainable development.

Nasiriyah International Airport is designed to handle passenger and cargo services. In its first phase it will have a capacity of 750,000 passengers per year, rising to 2.5 million passengers annually in a later phase. Facilities include a 3,400-metre runway, modern air traffic control tower, passenger terminal, cargo-capable infrastructure and full supporting services.
